Figure Drawing 1

I'm starting a new series of digital drawings that focus on drawing the whole human body in a variety of poses from a variety of perspectives and angles. I hope to explore the use of foreshortening and create images that have a more interesting composition

While my life drawing series focuses more on begin sensual and is always drawn from observation, these will be more geometric and sometimes drawn without a model present.

Selective Focus 14

Abstract Digital Art 5 - Layers

I'm experimenting with a new technique for my abstract digital artwork that involves the use of more layers containing different textures. Before I was using abstract charcoal drawings to create images, but this one uses overlapping layers of coloured pencil.

It allows me to use a wider colour pallet and create more complex and nuanced images, but it also makes the lines and shapes I draw much less smooth and flowing. Perhaps I'll try to embrace the rough quality of the pencils for my next set of abstract digital creations.

Digital Portrait 1

A lot of the time when people draw a face, they concentrate on perfecting the features. In this piece, I decide to just try to capture the shape and shading of the face, ignoring the features as much as possible. The effect is quite ghostly, a face with no eyes, but I think this is something I will definitely do more of in future.

Life Drawing 4 - Lower Torsos

The first one is a female, and the second male.

Dying Berries

I found a lush red-green leaved bush full of beautiful bright green berries, and began photographing them. However, I also found that the more textured purple berries that were slowly withering away made for much more beautiful photographs.

Abstract Digital Art 3 - Wreath

Selective Focus Photography 11

I usually let the subject choose what facial expression they make, whether or not they want to pose, in what direction they look etc. This helps to give my photos variety, and the process becomes collaboration between me and the subject; I am portraying them in the way they chose to be portrayed. However, the  in terms of quality, the results vary.

Most of the time, the best photos are taken when the subject doesn't seem to care that a photo is being taken. Sometimes though, I find a person who can look right at the lens and smile completely naturally.

You can see this photo in high quality along with many others on my Flickr page.

Abstract Digital Art 2 - Lattice

Selective Focus Photography 2 - Baby Pine Cones

I took this photo today in Hyde Park experimenting with macro photography using a selective focus lens. I really like the aperture I made for this shot, which created the simple striped texture in the background.

Life Drawing 2 - Man and Woman Lying

Life drawing - drawn from observation.

I've always been very interested in the paintings of Oskar Shlemmer, who drew people in ways so simple a geometric, it made them look more like abstract statues than breathing creatures. When life drawing I often forget that the people in front of me are alive, and simplify their form into shapes that come together something like a body. Ideally, the images come out as cold a lifeless, but bold and statuesque.

Experiments in Selective Focus Photography

I just got a new lens made by an independent photographer and lens maker.

For those not familiar with photographic terminology, is basically a lens that makes things look blurry but cool.

For those who are, it has a soft focus and selective focus mode (the latter of which was used in these photos) but the main advantage is that I can add custom apertures to it, which is how I got the unique bokeh and background. These are taken with an x shaped aperture, but I hope to make and experiment with others soon.

The glow on people's faces is beautiful, but the way it captures hair is amazing.

The lens flair can be amazing though.

Go to my Flickr page to see a few more of these in higher quality, and definitely check out Johnny Optic, who made the lens.
